The Charity
Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller and his wife Linda. In 2010, Habitat for Humanity reached a milestone of sorts- they built or repaired over 400,000 houses. Habitat is a fairly high profile charity, thanks to the attention given to it by celebrities, but the main amount of work is done by local affiliates (you can click here to enter your zip code and find a Habitat affiliate near you)
The Song
"newfallen" was a song that (mercifully) arrived with the first snowfall of this season. I had been working on another song for the December single, and that song sounded anything but wintry. But "newfallen" arrived late at night (as do most of my songs) while watching the snow fall slowly and silently out our living room window. This song is a bit different for me, stylistically- it's kind of classical sounding, but it's not classical music. It's possibly a bit ECM jazz-sort of sounding, but it's not that either.
The middle section (the closest thing to a standard "chorus" in this song) is part of a hammered dulcimer piece I wrote in the winter of last year. Everything about that segment made the rest of the song stronger.
